Nissan Adds Cummins Diesel to Frontier
The midsize diesel pickup market is about to get more competitive with Nissan combining a 2.8L Cummins diesel engine with the Frontier! It’s pretty clear that Nissan is going all in with Cummins for their next generation Titan and Frontier. Cummins has been working with the Department of Energy and Nissan in developing a high efficiency 2.8L diesel engine since 2010, and originally slated the 2.8L to go into the Titan. Now that the Titan is receiving a 5.0L Cummins, it makes sense for Nissan to use the 2.8L in the Frontier.
The new Cummins 2.8L diesel powerplant is said to output over 200 horsepower and more than 350 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an all a new 8-speed automatic transmission the diesel Frontier will average over 28MPG.

It’s safe to assume that this is just the tip of the iceberg for the next generation Frontier. We should expect an update to the front fascia, as well as to the interior, and that it’ll follow behind the anticipated 2015 Titan diesel. Past that it looks like the midsize diesel pickup race is between the Colorado and Frontier, which one would you drive home?
