The Bushwacker Founder’s Award Winner
The 2014 SEMA Show was filled with all kinds of wild rides, but there was only one winner of the first Bushwacker Founder’s Award. The award, which was given to the builder of the best truck or SUV at the 2014 SEMA, was judged by a panel of industry experts and represented a builder’s passion for the automotive aftermarket. The judges looked at a ton of vehicles at the show, but in the end, it was Josh Ellison’s candy apple red 2014 Ford F-350 Super Duty that took the top prize of $1,500 and the Founder’s Award Trophy.
Josh, the President of Royalty Core, a manufacturer of truck grilles and accessories, built his F-350 at his shop in Eugene, Oregon in only two months. Nearly every inch of the truck has been customized; from the from Fusion bumper with Royalty Core grille inserts to the dual black MBRP tailpipes. There’s even a custom rack in the bed for a Polaris RZR!
The truck wears Bushwacker Pocket Style Fender Flares with custom bolts from Royalty Core. These flares add additional coverage to the 40″ Interco tires mounted on 24″ Hostile wheels, which have been custom painted to match the vehicle’s paint scheme. The rolling stock is bolted on with V&V Concepts’ chrome spiked lug nuts, too. The truck has been lifted a whopping 15″ using custom Bullet Proof suspension components, which includes 10 dual-reservoir shocks, coilovers, traction bars, steering stabilizers, and custom hoops, all of which were installed by Dunks Performance. In addition, Josh installed Mag-Hytech differential covers and a transmission cover, which were also paint-matched.
To say this truck has some exterior modifications would be a gross understatement. This amazing creation has seemingly every exterior modification that’s hot in the industry right now. Being the owner of a custom grille and accessory company, Josh showcased many of his company’s products. This includes a front grille, custom bumper inserts, interior door panel inserts, a custom headache rack, and speaker grilles. There is a host of LED lighting (a very popular accessory at this year’s show) as well as Vision X lights above the cab, in the grille, in and on the bumpers, and on the headache rack. Even the headlights are now LEDs, thanks to Spyder Auto. Other accessories include custom-made King Ranch badges, gloss-black Monster Hooks, and a Warn ZEON12 winch.
No custom truck is complete without a big stereo and that gear comes courtesy of Kicker. There are aftermarket amps, speakers, wires, crossovers, color-changing LED speakers, as well as waterproof speakers on the Polaris RZR. There are also no fewer than 10 switches for lights and outdoor speakers. Oh, and there’s Bluetooth and video products, too.
We noticed right away how shiny the truck was, and that shine comes with a stunningly smooth texture, too. The truck’s finish has a baked-on ceramic finish from N-Touch Detailing that allows for shine that looks miles deep and is literally as smooth as glass.
For extra get up and go, the truck has an S&B Filters intake kit, an MBRP dual exhaust system with black ceramic-coated 8″ tips, an Edge Evolution CTS touchscreen programmer, an H&S intercooler pipe, and a Cervinis Ram Air hood.
Did we mention there was a freaking Polaris RZR on the back, too?
The Bushwacker Founder’s Award is all about recognizing a builder’s passion for the automotive aftermarket, and Josh’s Super Duty certainly expressed that. It was a custom creation that was like no other and was truly worthy of first place. That being said, there were two runners up with exceptional vehicles: Kelly Fromm’s awesome 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD (located in the BDS Suspension Booth, and was built for Rev-It-Up For Wounded Warriors); and Lonnie McCurry Sr. for his 1976 Ford Bronco, which resided in the Skyjacker booth. Both runners up received $250.
Our hats go off to all those who entered to win this first ever Bushwacker Founder’s Award. After all, without the builders we wouldn’t have a truck aftermarket. And although this was the first Founder’s Award, you can rest assured it won’t be the last. So if you’re building a custom truck for the 2015 SEMA Show, put your thinking caps on now. As you can see, it takes an amazing build—and lots of passion—to win the Bushwacker Founder’s Award.
