The Exploring Elements Dodge Ram XP Camper
Bryon Dorr and Sarah Blessington are the people behind Exploring Elements, a blog with a focus on adventure travel, gear reviews, and adventure sports including kayaking and mountain biking.
After starting out with a Ford E-series Sportsmobile, the Exploring Elements team moved into a diesel-powered 2001 Dodge Ram 2500-based camper which they debuted at the 2014 Overland Expo. It’s a capable, comfortable rig that’s great both on the pavement and off the road, and they intend it to take them on many adventures.
Their truck has a host of modifications to it including a set of Bushwacker Pocket Style Fender Flares up front, 17-inch Method Race Wheels shod with General Grabber AT2 tires, a stout Buckstop winch bumper housing a WARN 16.5ti winch, an array of PIAA lights, a custom racking system on the cab for bikes and kayaks, and solar panels. Other bits include items such as Maxtrax, Rotopax, and a Hi-Lift jack to help the duo get to their next destination. And that’s only the stuff on the outside.
Replacing the truck’s bed is an XP Camper prototype unit, which features many of the comforts of home. There is a fridge, sink, bed and table setup, a bit of storage, and even a small cartridge toilet on board. Having checked it out for myself, it’s pretty trick. Additionally, the top pops up for ventilation and a bit more space. There’s even a skylight above the bed area for more daylight as well as nighttime stargazing.
At the time of this posting, Bryon and Sarah have put on more than 13,000 miles in under nine months. That’s a lot of road time. Places of note include Overland Expo in Arizona; Moab, Utah; the Alcan Highway; various parts of Alaska, including the Arctic Circle; and the Northwest Territories in Canada. Needless to say, they have no plans to stop traveling and intend to travel the globe in search of the next adventure.
It’s always interesting to see where Bryon and Sarah have been, where they’re going, and what they’re doing. Having spent time with them both, they are genuinely great people with an equally great truck. They live a life of adventure that many dream of but few will actually do. However, you don’t have to be a world explorer to appreciate their Dodge XP Camper—it’s really cool, too.
