Jeep Wrangler Diesel CRD Coming 2016

Finally, a Jeep Wrangler diesel is within sight! According to Edmunds, an anonymous industry insider has tipped that the 2016 Jeep Wrangler, which will be available 2015, will have a diesel engine option. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering that Chrysler group now offers diesel options for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2014 Dodge RAM 1500. Don’t forget that they’ve also been testing a diesel Jeep Wrangler in the states.

Not only will the 2016 Jeep Wrangler receive the CRD diesel option, but it’ll be given a refresher – presumably with a new interior trim and exterior colors/options. This move will renew the JK Wrangler as it nears the end of its decade long tenure. I’ve also been told that the 2017 model year is when we should expect a new Wrangler from Jeep. I was told this during EJS ’13 by a Jeep employee working on the project.

There isn’t much known about the diesel engine that the Wrangler will use, but it’s a safe bet to say that it’ll be the VM Motori 3L V6 EcoDiesel that’s found in the ’14 Grand Cherokee and RAM 1500. This new 3.0L V-6 diesel engine will most likely be combined with the new 8-speed transmission scheduled to be released with the 2014 Wrangler. This combo could give the 2016 Jeep Wrangler CRD fuel economy rating over 30mpg, which is bound to delight, but it comes with a steep stprice tag. Jeep added a $4,500 premium for the Grand Cherokee’s diesel option, which is $2,305 more than the Hemi V8.

Now that we know a diesel is coming to the Wrangler, let’s talk about what the market wants in the next-generation Jeep Wrangler
