The NW Overland Rally, held outside of Leavenworth, Washington, is a place where overlanding enthusiasts from across the Pacific Northwest (and sometimes from much further away) come to camp, talk travel, check out the latest gear for their vehicles (and campsites), and take classes from experts in their respective fields.

X Elles Racing‘s Rhonda Cahill (left) and Rachelle Croft, teach a class in navigation.

There were classes in everything from vehicle recovery and navigation, to wilderness first-aid and off-road driving. There were even classes on fly fishing, wine, and cooking. Bushwacker had a booth showcasing its array of products, and we met a host of new customers, old friends, and everyone in between.

Saturday we hit the trails in Liberty, WA  for some four-wheeling—the trails and scenery didn’t disappoint. Steep hill climbs, plenty of off-camber situations, and deep V notches kept things challenging and tested driver skill and vehicle limits.

Land Rover Discovery winchingSome of the V notches were pretty deep and quite wide. This Land Rover Discovery ended up slipping into the crack. Luckily, the owner had a winch and was able to right himself and drove away without any body damage (to him or the vehicle).

This was my fourth trip to this event, and every year I’m impressed with the diversity among vehicles. There are modified Jeep Wranglers, overland-outfitted Toyotas, huge Unimogs, wild 4×4 campers, and just about everything else you could think of. Add to that great people, fantastic vendors, informative classes, and a heck of a raffle each night (which included a Bushwacker gift certificate), and the  2014 NW Overland Rally—which gets bigger and bigger each year—was a hit once again.

Speaking of all those vehicles, here is a smattering of some of the rigs that showed up for the 2014 NW Overland Rally. Hope to see you there next year!
