Volkswagen Tristar Concept

Volkswagen Tristar Concept

Looking at the new Volkswagen Tristar Concept, which is slated to debut at the IAA 2014 International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany, you may be thinking it looks a lot like a modern Volkswagen Vanagon with a pickup bed. In fact, Volkswagen made a product call the Type 2 Syncro DoKa, which was essentially a four-wheel drive Volkswagen Vanagon with a crew cab and a pickup bed. They’re highly sought after and have a cult following. Even regular VW Syncro vans are prized vehicles among many enthusiasts. And to honor the 30th anniversary of the 4wd Syncro, VW is showing off this concept.

Volkswagen already makes the Amorak Pickup, but the Tristar is more of a commercial vehicle and likely features styling cues of VW’s upcoming commercial vehicle lineup. I’d be great for hauling cargo off road or in harsh climates. However, I can’t help but visualize this as a great overland-style  adventure-travel vehicle. After all, it has full-time four-wheel drive and a locking rear differential,  extra ground clearance, and beefy tires which would make it pretty capable off the pavement.

The Tristar concept is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine producing 200 horsepower and 332 ft/lbs of torque running through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. You’ll also note the meaty BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires, which adds to the vehicle’s rugged looks.

No word if the Tristar will ever be put into production as it appears here or if it will come to North America. However, as this concept sits now, we think it’s pretty awesome.
